Interesting e-mail thread

Filed under: user issues — admin @ 7:28 pm

Having a user with problems, only problem really is that they entered an invalid e-mail address. With the changes made after the hacking spam attack across the pligg network, most sites installed a modification to the user registration that requires the use of a valid e-mail address.

Getting a bounce back on one address, who gave us a shout, the e-mail address that was provided does not resolve at hushmail.com.

If you want to use this site for what it was intended for, you have to use a valid e-mail address to sign up, anything short of that, gains no account. We will be cleaning out bad registrations weekly probably, but this will keep comment and user account spam at a minimum.

This site as many pligg sites are meant to be enjoyed, not the vehicle for spammers, or people bent on bad SEO. With the changes across the sites that use Pligg, this job just became tougher for everyone, but we want to maintain a consistent user experience.

Remember to always use a valid e-mail address when signing up, you have to do this because we validate all users now by sending a validation/activation link.

If you make 500 accounts in 4 hours we will notice

Filed under: Hackers — admin @ 8:16 pm

Some bubba is out there today on this web site making accounts right and left, using PycURL a their agent, a friend of ours wrote about the whole thing here.

The interesting part is “did anyone for a moment think about this?” before they started the work. The interesting part is that it looks like it is a bug in our code that allows folks to bypass the captcha used on the site. That is a hole that is going to get fixed in the next day.

The refreshing thing about a hacking attack, it spurs software fixes very quickly.

More Social SEO networking

Filed under: Spam, Spamkilled — admin @ 6:48 pm

Makes for an interesting day, we are watching Mixx Take off, which is cool, it is a nice site, we are seeing Technorati change over their formatting, Digg has new icons, and it seems like it is general update day across the major social networks.

In the mean time we are still dealing with fly by night SEO companies that think the smaller social book marking sites are fun to spam and throw their stuff up thinking that no one will catch them.

Got news, now that we are onto these kinds of sites, and these kinds of people, it has come down to a process where we are still thinking of charging 100,000 dollars for every spammer that puts their stuff up on the site. In all it makes an interesting corundum, remember that our terms of service are quite clear.

Please use this site for exploring interesting stories, not to upload spam for spammy web sites or blogs that are ripping off others works hoping to make some Adsense dollars on them.

More people spam killed with impunity.

Ahh nasty SEO companies

Filed under: Spamkilled — admin @ 10:18 am

We have taken some steps to shut down some nasty SEO companies over the last couple of days here at Yasvs. It is not unusual for an SEO company to want to use social networking to plug their stuff, but taking it one step further, we have a strict policy against SEO use, and spammer use at this site. Especially if they are making an account, and selling the latest India Outsourcing services etc. the following users have been disabled and spamkilled.

Vlov/Vlov1 – spamkilled, disabled, SEO company
Israelonblog – spamkilled, disabled, no links
Calhountril – spamkilled, disabled, no links
Maddy01 – spamkilled, disabled, no links – items uploaded corrupted

The reason for spam killed – either identified as an SEO organization, spammer, or not using a valid e-mail address when signed up.

If you are not a spammer and think that we took this a bit too far, give us a shout, support@yasvs.com and maybe we will re-enable your account, but by not using a real e-mail address, or being able to track the user back to an SEO company, well that is against the policy items under our about us page.

If users are still unclear.

This is not a site for SEO’s, this is not a site for spammers, do not ever use this site in an e-mail that can be construed as spam, do not use this site for evil, or will bring discredit to this site, our ISP, our hosting provider or yourself.

If you are wondering just how serious we are, we carefully document all this kind of stuff, and will write about it, and say that your company is basically willing to violate this sites policies to sell your stuff.

Thanks!

Spammers

Filed under: Spam — admin @ 7:00 pm

Due to recent events with a spammer, this site was shut down for three days, and we are now on probation. The spammer was a fly by night company who posted an article on the web site, and then used that link in a spam message to forums around the world. Because our link was included in that message, we were labeled a spam site, which we are not.

Because of that a new spam policy is now in effect.

Do not ever use a link on this web site as spam, we will charge a minimum of 100,000 dollars USA. Washington State has some very interesting anti-spam laws, and there are all sorts of things we can do, do not push this one, we mean it.

Do not ever make an account on this site with the intent to send spam, this site is meant for people to share neat stories with each other, not drive your companies economic engine or spam. If you see spam on this site, we will spam kill it and disable the users account. We have also instituted a number of technological changes to reduce any spam, or anyone we think is a spammer.

Use this site for what it was intended for, sharing cool stories with your friends and family, we are not interested nor will we tolerate attempts to use this site to support any economic activity.

We will happily disclose all our information when requested, we also log IP addresses, URL’s and know where everyone comes from on this web site and what you do. Use of this web site means that you know we are monitoring you, and will take steps against spam as we see fit.

If you want to read more on this, we kept a running dialog on this at techwag.com. You can read the articles Part 1 Part 2 and Part 3 by clicking the links.

Thanks!
